Ring in 2011 with the Bellingham Tea Party

When I think about the past couple of years, the positive awakening of the U.S. electorate, the total denial of this awakening by the political leadership in Washington D.C., it is no wonder that I am thankful to ring in the New Year.  With a firm reliance on the ability of the grass root relationship of the Tea Parties nationwide to keep a firm eye on the career politicians and their newly elected compatriots, I enter into 2011 with a belief that change is coming.

2010 In Review -- 2011 and Beyond!

Happy New Year to all and to all an enthusiastic THANKS FOR 2010... we say goodbye to an inspiring 2010 and hello to a vigorous and energizing 2011.

Let this quotation by Daniel Webster stir your hearts and minds as we look to 2011:

Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.

~ Daniel Webster, US diplomat, lawyer, orator, & politician (1782 - 1852)

Upon reflection of 2010 we see a light shining on all the patriots who have given of themselves in the last two years by rising up in one voice and rallying for the preservation of our country.

A renewed commitment to overseeing the government locally, at the state level, and nationally was generated by our citizens through grass root assemblies that delivered the following accomplishments in 2010... And all of it was made possible because of you!

  • Election victories across the nation.
  • Balanced government power in Whatcom County and to some extent in Washington State.
  • Visible and articulate network of patriots speaking out publicly for the first time.
  • Increasing number of citizens demanding government "get their fiscal houses in order".

The Bellingham Tea Party, along with other Tea Party organizations across this nation, made the battle cry plain and simple to understand... we reject deficit spending, the concentration of power in central government and the systematic attempt to diminish states' rights and individual liberty.

May our fervor remain in 2011 as we are united in a passionate movement to reclaim the balance of power declared by our Constitution... decreeing government's accountability to "We the People". We have lots to do!

Click here to review the Bellingham Tea Party 2010 events that brought us together...

Our next objective: Ensuring the new Congress lives up to their oath of office to uphold and defend the Constitution, and in 2012, electing senators and a president who believe in our Constitution. Bellingham Tea Party events for 2011 are being developed and will be announced when they are more completely framed

EPA begins Power Grab through Carbon Emission’s Regulation

While we listen to the tragedy of East Coast blizzards, the Federal EPA begins its power grab to regulate and tax carbon emissions.  This is just the beginning and will foretell the future of the GOP.  If the GOP unite behind the principles that the Tea Party has given them, fight every power grab the Executive Branch fires at the private sector and ‘We the People’, with reductions to the size of all government over the next 2 years"; 2012 should be a landslide for the GOP.

EPA, Texas go to war over carbon-emission rules

posted at 2:00 pm on December 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

And so it begins, and on the most fertile red-state territory in the nation.  Texas, which got four more seats in the House through the 2010 Census reapportionment, has had its air-quality rules superceded by the EPA as part of its aggressive new action on carbon emissions.  Governor Rick Perry promises a fight:

The federal Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday effectively declared Texas unfit to regulate its owngreenhouse gas emissions and took over carbon dioxide permitting of any new or expanding industrial facilities starting Jan. 2.

The EPA also set up a framework for regulating greenhouse gas emissions in seven other states: Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Oregon and Wyoming. In addition, the agency set a timetable on establishing regulated levels of greenhouse gas emissions.

The action will give the EPA permitting authority over refineries, power plants and cement facilities in Texas, the agency said, but will not affect small pollution source facilities, such as restaurants and farms.

Well, perhaps not directly, but the increase in energy prices and shortages created by the EPA imposition of what will essentially be carbon taxes will impact businesses throughout the Texas economy, as well as consumers who ultimately pay the costs of the regulatory regime. Rick Perry has signaled a court fight to stop the EPA and the Obama administration:

Texas is the only state that has refused to implement the new rules. President Barack Obama is pressing ahead with the regulations after Congress failed to pass legislation capping carbon emissions. Perry, a Republican, calls the rules overreaching by the federal government that will cripple his state’s economy.

“The EPA’s misguided plan paints a huge target on the backs of Texas agriculture and energy producers by implementing unnecessary, burdensome mandates on our state’s energy sector, threatening hundreds of thousands of Texas jobs and imposing increased living costs on Texas families,” Katherine Cesinger, a Perry spokeswoman, said in an e-mailed statement.

Obama Administration Approves of the FCC Usurpation of the Legislative Process? Go Figure…The Road to Tyranny is Right Here in the U.S.of America

From a local blog that puts the latest move by regulators in the Obama era into perspective.  Just because the Congress is now supposed to be handed over to a ‘conservative’ majority, does not mean that ‘We the People’ can sit back on our laurels.  This past ‘lame duck’ session has been anything but lame; chaos might be a more appropriate descriptor of the ducks in D.C. right now!  Quackin-Up!

Time for the Alternet?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has now circumvented checks by congress and the courts, in their bid to regulate the Internet. Started during the first big wave of the "progressive" movement with the Communications Act of 1934, the FCC has always been the government's tool for regulating technology, commerce, and of course, information. When it was first created, the FCC was regulating the then-new technologies of interstate and foreign telegraph, telephone, cable, and radio communications. Where in the Constitution did We the People give government the authority to do that?
By establishing a few strategic choke points on business, the government has very powerful control over content. Where in the Constitution did We the People give government the authority to do that? If radio stations want to keep their FCC license (i.e., stay in business), they have to comply with reams of technical, legal, business and content regulations. Even for a small mom-and-pop station, it requires at least one full-time employee just to stay in compliance. See section 73 and section 74 of the FCC Broadcast Rules. But wait, there's more! Much more! I know. I used to be the chief engineer (First Class Radiotelephone Operator License P1-13-10705) for just such businesses. The excuse given for this overwhelming government take-over in 1934 was to ensure freedom from interference and to set up international and interstate compatibility standards. Never mind the fact that the free market could have done the same, and in fact, was already moving in that direction. Where in the Constitution did We the People give government the authority to do that?

DeMint vows to reverse FCC's 'Internet takeover'

By: Mark Tapscott 12/21/10 2:33 PM
Editorial Page Editor

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-SC, says Federal Communications Commission should be renamed the "Fabricating a Crisis Commission," following a vote by the panel's three Democrats to approve proposed rules that amount to a hostile takeover of the Internet by a government agency acting illegally.

The proposal - misleadingly described by proponents as an attempt to insure "net neutrality" by guaranteeing equal access to the Internet - was introduced a year ago by Julius Genachowski, President Obama's appointee as FCC chairman.

A federal court has ruled that the commission has no authority to regulate the Internet, and a bipartisan group of senators and representives warned Genechowski not to attempt to impose a regulatory regime on the Internet earlier this year.

The move's legality was even questioned by FCC Commissioner Michael Copp, one of the Democrats who voted today with Genachowski, saying he considered voting against the proposal because it lacks a sufficiently defensible legal basis to survive a court challenge promised by major Internet Service Providers like Verizon, Microsoft, and AT & T.

But legal challenges by industry are likely to be much less of a problem for the Genachowski-led takeover than efforts in Congress to stop the FCC in its tracks.

That's clearly what DeMint has in mind, as he said in his statement released today following the FCC action:

“The Obama Administration has ignored evidence that this federal takeover will hang a millstone of regulatory and legal uncertainty around the neck of a vibrant sector of our economy.

"Proceeding on its own liberal whims rather than facts, this FCC has chosen to grant itself broad authority to limit how businesses can bring the internet to consumers in faster and more innovative ways.

“Americans loudly demanded a more limited federal government this November, but the Obama Administration has dedicated itself to expanding centralized government planning. Today, unelected bureaucrats rammed through an internet takeover, even after Congress and courts warned them not to.

“To keep the internet economy thriving, this decision must be reversed. Regulatory reform will be a top priority for Republicans in the next Congress, and I intend to prevent the FCC or any government agency from unilaterally burdening our recovering economy with baseless regulation.

"In order to provide the stability businesses need to grow, I will work with my fellow senators to see passage of my FCC Act, which would ensure that the FCC can only use its rulemaking powers where there is clear evidence of a harmful market failure, as well as the REINS Act, which would add the accountability of a Congressional vote before any government agency’s proposed major regulations may be finalized.”

If the FCC plan somehow manages to survive, it will almost certainly do for First Amendment liberties and the Internet what it did for them in regulating broadcast television and radio. Former CBS News president Fred Friendly's landmark book, "The Good Guys, the Bad Guys and the First Amendment," describes in great detail how the Kennedy and Johnson administrations used the FCC to silence conservative critics

The Only Thing That Will Save Us Now Is Fear Itself

By Herbert E. Meyer

On March 4, 1933, millions of Americans sat beside their radios listening to Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivering his first inaugural address, in which he famously declared that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."  (Joe Biden thinks he watched the speech on television, but that's the subject for an essay in Current Psychiatry, and this is American Thinker.) FDR gave Americans the confidence and courage to cope with the Great Depression, which is among the reasons he's one of our very greatest presidents.

I hate to say this, but right now the only thing that can save our country is -- fear itself.  Our government is bankrupt, its deficit is insurmountable, and at both the federal and state levels, we've run up more debt than can possibly be repaid.  This isn't a political thing; it's a numbers thing.  Either everything I've ever learned about math and economics is wrong, or we're on the verge of going down.  The only possible way to come through safely -- and even so, the odds are against us -- will be to frighten ourselves so badly that we'll be willing to do things that in normal times we simply could not imagine doing.

Tax Deal Could Lead to Higher Interest Rates for US Debt

Moody's Warns It May Cut US Rating if Tax-Cut Deal Becomes Law

Monday, 13 Dec 2010 11:34 AM

Moody's warned Monday that it could move a step closer to cutting the U.S. Aaa rating if President Barack Obama's tax and unemployment benefit package becomes law.
The plan agreed to by Obama and Republican leaders last week could push up debt levels, increasing the likelihood of a negative outlook on the United States rating in the coming two years, the ratings agency said.
A negative outlook, if adopted, would make a rating cut more likely over the following 12-to-18 months.
For the United States, a loss of the top AAA rating, reduce the appeal of U.S. Treasury’s, which currently rank as among the world's safest investments.
"From a credit perspective, the negative effects on government finance are likely to outweigh the positive effects of higher economic growth," Moody's analyst Steven Hess said in a report sent late on Sunday.
After Obama announced his plan, Treasury prices fell sharply in volatile trade last week and yields have hit a six-month high, in part due to concerns over the effect the package will have on government debt levels.

Why Constitutional Conservatism Is Ascending

By Mark J. Fitzgibbons

If 2009 was the year of birth of the Tea Party movement, 2010 was the year of ascendancy of constitutional conservatism.  In many ways, the movements are the same -- except, perhaps, that the Tea Party is a movement of political activism by people who weren't traditionally activists, and constitutional conservatism represents an awakening about the way back to American exceptionalism.

Happy Holiday or Black Friday? Which Do You Celebrate?

As a true believer in ‘free markets’ and no ‘public/private’ co-operatives which exist only by tax dollars…it pains me to agree that events like ‘Black Friday’ and all of it’s relatives are not a good way for consumerism to exist.  It’s just another bubble which encourages otherwise respectful human beings to behave like self centered infants.  Holidays should be about giving, celebrating and spending time with family or loved ones.  The Holidays should be about enjoying these moments, not stressing out and spending so much money that you spend the rest of the year to pay off the debt you’ve accumulated, just to do it all over again.

How are you spending your holidays this year?  Share your favorite ‘holiday’ thing with me and anyone else who happens by this posting.

Food Safety Act–Criminalizes the Right to Grow, Own, Trade, Transport, Share, Feed and Eat Homegrown Crops?

Thought I would provide some new information about the a new law that the ‘Lame Duck’ session is voting on to ‘improve’ our lives….This information comes from the website.

Yours In Truth  Winking smile  Shelly

S510, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010, may be the most dangerous bill in the history of the US. ( )
"If accepted [S 510] would preclude the public's right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes. It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one's choice. It will be unconstitutional and contrary to natural law or, if you like, the will of God." It is similar to what India faced with imposition of the salt tax during British rule, only S 510 extends control over all food in the US, violating the fundamental human right to food." ~ Dr. Shiv Chopra, Canada Health whistleblower.
Monsanto says it has no interest in the bill and would not benefit from it, but Monsanto's Michael Taylor who gave us rBGH and unregulated genetically modified (GM) organisms, appears to have designed it and is waiting as an appointed Food Czar to the FDA (a position unapproved by Congress) to administer the agency it would create without judicial review if it passes.
S 510 would give Monsanto unlimited power over all US seed, food supplements, food AND FARMING.
In the 1990s, Bill Clinton introduced HACCP (Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points) purportedly to deal with contamination in the meat industry. Clinton's HACCP delighted the offending corporate (World Trade Organization "WTO") meat packers since it allowed them to inspect themselves, eliminated thousands of local food processors (with no history of contamination), and centralized meat into their control. Monsanto promoted HACCP.
In 2008, Hillary Clinton, urged a powerful centralized food safety agency as part of her campaign for president. Her advisor was Mark Penn, CEO of Burson Marsteller*, a giant PR firm representing Monsanto. Clinton lost, but Clinton friends such as Rosa DeLauro, whose husband's firm lists Monsanto as a progressive client and globalization as an area of expertise, introduced early versions of S 510.
S 510 fails on moral, social, economic, political, constitutional, and human survival grounds.
1. It puts all US food and all US farms under Homeland Security and the Department of Defense, in the event of contamination or an ill-defined emergency. It resembles the Kissinger Plan.
2. It would end US sovereignty over its own food supply by insisting on compliance with the WTO, thus threatening national security. It would end the Uruguay Round Agreement Act of 1994, which put US sovereignty and US law under perfect protection. Instead, S 510 says:
Nothing in this Act (or an amendment made by this Act) shall be construed in a manner inconsistent with the agreement establishing the World Trade Organization or any other treaty or international agreement to which the United States is a party.
3. It would allow the government, under Maritime Law, to define the introduction of any food into commerce (even direct sales between individuals) as smuggling into "the United States." Since under that law, the US is a corporate entity and not a location, "entry of food into the US" covers food produced anywhere within the land mass of this country and "entering into" it by virtue of being produced.
4. It imposes Codex Alimentarius on the US, a global system of control over food. It allows the United Nations (UN), World Health Organization (WHO), UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the WTO to take control of every food on earth and remove access to natural food supplements. Its bizarre history and its expected impact in limiting access to adequate nutrition (while mandating GM food, GM animals, pesticides, hormones, irradiation of food, etc.) threatens all safe and organic food and health itself, since the world knows now it needs vitamins to survive, not just to treat illnesses.
5. It would remove the right to clean, store and thus own seed in the US, putting control of seeds in the hands of Monsanto and other multinationals, threatening US security. See Seeds How to criminalize them, for more details.
6. It includes NAIS, an animal traceability program that threatens all small farmers and ranchers raising animals. The UN is participating through the WHO, FAO, WTO, and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in allowing mass slaughter of even heritage breeds of animals and without proof of disease. Biodiversity in farm animals is being wiped out to substitute genetically engineered animals on which corporations hold patents. Animal diseases can be falsely declared. S 510 includes the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), despite its corrupt involvement in the H1N1 scandal, which is now said to have been concocted by the corporations.
7. It extends a failed and destructive HACCP to all food, thus threatening to do to all local food production and farming what HACCP did to meat production put it in corporate hands and worsen food safety.
8. It deconstructs what is left of the American economy. It takes agriculture and food, which are the cornerstone of all economies, out of the hands of the citizenry, and puts them under the total control of multinational corporations influencing the UN, WHO, FAO and WTO, with HHS, and CDC, acting as agents, with Homeland Security as the enforcer. The chance to rebuild the economy based on farming, ranching, gardens, food production, natural health, and all the jobs, tools and connected occupations would be eliminated.
9. It would allow the government to mandate antibiotics, hormones, slaughterhouse waste, pesticides and GMOs. This would industrialize every farm in the US, eliminate local organic farming, greatly increase global warming from increased use of oil- based products and long-distance delivery of foods, and make food even more unsafe. The five items listed the Five Pillars of Food Safety are precisely the items in the food supply which are the primary source of its danger.
10. It uses food crimes as the entry into police state power and control. The bill postpones defining all the regulations to be imposed; postpones defining crimes to be punished, postpones defining penalties to be applied. It removes fundamental constitutional protections from all citizens in the country, making them subject to a corporate tribunal with unlimited power and penalties, and without judicial review.

A Letter to All President’s from ‘We the People’

A Letter to the President from We the People

Dear President Obama,
“We The People” have stated resolutely we reject your vision for our country. You claim you have not heard us.
“We The People” have assembled across America resisting your efforts to subvert our constitution and undermine our liberty. You claim you have not seen us.
Since you have not acknowledged our message, let us here present it once more for if as President Wilson said, “a leader’s ear must ring with the voices of the people,” the time has come.
Our greatest treasure is freedom – the absence of restraints on our ability to think and to act. The corollary of freedom is individual responsibility. We believe in the power of the individual.
A few years ago President Bush said, “History moves toward freedom because the desire for freedom is written in every human heart.” Let us add that we will preserve it only as long as devotion to freedom is expressed in the heart of our actions.
When President Lincoln dedicated Gettysburg National Cemetery he declared, “It is for us the living to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus so nobly advanced.”
That unfinished cause for which our soldiers willingly go to battle and for which so many have given their lives is a free United States of America. It has been nearly one hundred fifty years and the work President Lincoln spoke of is not finished. In fact, that work will never be finished.
Freedom is the capacity of self-determination. It is not an entity but a condition and conditions change. Freedom can expand, yet so can it contract.
You promised change when you took office, Mr. President, but subjugation is not change we wanted or will accept.
You have expanded government, violated our Constitution, confounded laws, seized private industry, destroyed jobs, perverted our economy, curtailed free speech, corrupted our currency, weakened our national security, and endangered our sovereignty.
By compromising our nation’s cultural, legal and economic institutions, you are ensuring that our children will never achieve the same quality of life as we enjoy today. Through generational theft you are robbing the unborn of opportunity.
This is not acceptable. Not in America. We did not become a strong nation through hope but rather through self-reliance.
No one better understands the relationship between individual achievement, dignity and strength than our armed forces. Through every war our soldiers have held this nation’s destiny in their hands. They have not failed us. They cherish freedom enough that they are willing to die for it.
Our duty to them and to ourselves is to treasure freedom enough to live up to it.
We accept the challenge, Mr. President. That is why we are assembling across the land to deliver our message to you as often and in every way we can. Dismiss us at your political peril.
Our great nation is a Republic. We will not accept tyranny under any guise. Your policy to redistribute the fruits of our labor is Statism and will not be tolerated.
By our honor, Mr. President, we vow forever to resist coercive government in America. Patriots will not stand silent as you attempt to dismantle the greatest nation on earth. “We The People” will defend our liberty. We will protect our beloved country and America’s exceptionalism will prevail.
God Bless the United States of America!

The following is a copy of an article written by Spanish writer Sebastian Vilar Rodrigez and published in a Spanish newspaper on Jan. 15,
2008.  It doesn't take much imagination to extrapolate the message to the rest of Europe - and possibly to the rest of the world.

Date: Tue. 15 January 2008 14:30

By Sebastian Vilar Rodrigez
I walked down the street in Barcelona , and suddenly discovered a terrible truth - Europe died in Auschwitz .  We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims.  In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, and talent.

We destroyed the Chosen People, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world.
The contribution of this people is felt in all areas of life: science, art, international trade, and above all, as the conscience of the world.

These are the people we burned.
And under the pretense of tolerance, and because we wanted to prove to ourselves that we were cured of the disease of racism, we opened our gates to 20 million Muslims, who brought us stupidity and ignorance, religious extremism, and lack of tolerance,

crime, and poverty, due to an unwillingness to work and support their families with pride.
They have blown up our trains and turned our beautiful Spanish cities into the third world, drowning in filth and crime.

Shut up in the apartments they receive free from the government, they plan the murder and destruction of their naive hosts.
And thus, in our misery, we have exchanged culture for fanatical hatred, creative skill for destructive skill, intelligence for backwardness and superstition.
We have exchanged the pursuit of peace of the Jews of Europe and their talent for a better future for their children, their determined clinging to life because life is holy, for those who pursue death, for people consumed by the desire for death for themselves and others, for our children and theirs.
What a terrible mistake was made by miserable Europe .
A lot of Americans have become so insulated from reality that they imagine America can suffer defeat without any inconvenience to them.

14. And now we can add: In 2009, 31 people wounded and 13 American Soldiers murdered on base at Fort Hood by a Major who was known as...
a: You guessed it - A Muslim male extremist between the age of 17 and 40.
No, I really don't see a pattern here to justify profiling.  Do you?  So, to ensure we Americans/Canadians never offend anyone, particularly fanatic’s intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people.  They

must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winner and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim males between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty of profiling.
Let's send this to as many people as we can so that the Nancy Pelosis, Gloria Aldreds, and other dunder-headed attorneys, along with Federal Justices who want to thwart common sense, feel ashamed of themselves - if they have any such sense.
We can not allow the socialist transformation being brought on by the current administration to continue. Look at what it has done to Europe .
We all must stand together before it's too late and everything America stands for is lost.

The Jews are NOT promoting the brain-washing of children in military training camps, teaching them how to blow themselves up and cause maximum deaths of Jews and other non-Muslims.  The Jews don't hijack planes, nor kill athletes at the Olympics, or blow themselves up in German restaurants.  There is NOT one single Jew who has destroyed a church.  There is NOT a single Jew who protests by killing people.
The Jews don't traffic slaves, nor have leaders calling for Jihad and death to all the Infidels.
Perhaps the world's Muslims should consider investing more in standard education and less in blaming the Jews for all their problems.
Muslims must ask what they can do for humankind before they demand that humankind respects them.
Regardless of your feelings about the crisis between Israel and the Palestinians and Arab neighbors, even if you believe there is more culpability on Israel 's part, the following two sentences really say it all:
"If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more violence.  If the Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no more Israel ." Benjamin Netanyahu
General Eisenhower Warned Us.

It is a matter of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps, he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.
He did this because he said in words to this effect:
"Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened."
Recently the UK debated whether to remove 'The Holocaust' from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population, which claims it never, occurred.  It is not removed as yet.  However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that s gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.
It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended.

This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the, 6 million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians, and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, raped, burned, starved, beaten, experimented, on and humiliated while the German people looked the other way.
Now more than ever, with Iran , among others, claiming the Holocaust to be a myth, it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.
This e-mail is intended to reach 400 million people.  Be a link in the memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

How many years will it be before the attack on the World Trade Center 'NEVER HAPPENED,' because it offends some Muslim in the United States ?

The Rise of George Soros (and Agenda)

This week I watched all ‘3’ segments that the Glenn Beck Show did on ‘George Soros’ (aka: George Schwartz).  The most important segment was saved for last and I have brought it to my site for you to watch, learn and share.  It’s all about common sense folks.  A lot of what’s happened over the past decades have not made sense, but after watching this video clip and reading the documented/footnoted information on George Soros within the link below…it all makes sense.

Gov. Christie Does it Again!

What’s it going to take to elect a governor, senate and congress that will take on the system like Gov. Christie?

Father of fallen hero Aaron Aamot reflects on Veterans Day

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the "War to end all Wars" came to a close. Peace came to a world embroiled in war. It was to celebrate this peace that this day, Armistice Day, first became a national holiday - a day to remember and thank those who had brought it.

In the subsequent years our nation followed a policy eschewing war, putting actions to our words with peace conferences and disarmament treaties. We, of course, were not alone in these efforts to bring a lasting peace to our world.

1936: Gallup polled the American people concerning our possible involvement in another conflict in Europe. We were in the middle of the Great Depression. Domestic problems far outweighed foreign affairs. We had watched the rise of Mussolini, Hitler, and an ever more militaristic Japan under Hirohito. They looked and sounded like characters out of a comic book. They were little people, inconsequential people. Nobody in America wanted to die for some slob living halfway around the world. It didn't concern us. Nineteen out of 20 Americans said "stay out of foreign entanglements."

March, 1938: Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of Great Britain, stepped off his plane holding a treaty signed by the powers of Europe. He held it aloft with these words; "It is peace in our time." Eighteen months later, the "peace in our time" came to a violent end.

Dec. 7, 1941, "a day that will live in infamy" that it seems nobody remembers anymore. About 2,400 Americans were killed in a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. We had no plane to match the Japanese Zero, no force to oppose the German Blitzkrieg.

Although we had pursued peace with single-minded thoughtlessness, we were now at war and the young men and women of our country were called upon to make up for the failures of our diplomats. Wherever they went, they brought war. But peace followed after.

From that time to the present our sons and daughters, friends and neighbors have continued to serve us, the U.S., by going everywhere and doing everything. Regardless of the times or branch of service, they know that once they take that oath and put on that uniform they may find themselves in a place of extreme danger.

Yet generation after generation the great young men and women of America continue to come forth and stand in the gap for us. It is solely because of their willingness to do so - to sacrifice for all of us - that we as a nation continue to enjoy safety, security, our freedoms and our sacred rights in the midst of a world full of turmoil and uncertainty.

November is a significant month for our family. It was November, 1945, that dad came home. He stepped off the train down at the depot and walked uptown to the building now known as the Bellingham Towers, where his dad was working. Grandpa packed up his tools and they went home together.

Sixty-four years later, dad's grandson flew into the airport to a very different reception, as many thousands of people turned out to welcome him home. In the year since, our family has attended many memorials and dedications.

But this time of year brings to mind another dedicatory service attended by a man to whom the lives and fortunes of the soldier, the sailor, the Marine were always held close to his heart and mind for he was their commander-in-chief and he knew what they represented. On another November this tall, gaunt, haggard-looking man, Abraham Lincoln, stood up and encapsulated who we are as a nation protected by a citizen soldiery in a few simple words that still resonate today:

"It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated, here, to the unfinished work that they have thus far so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us ... that the nation shall, under God, have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Mark Aaron Aamot of Custer is a native of Whatcom County. While he never served in the Armed Forces, he is the son of one soldier and the father of four more. Aamot's son, U.S. Army Spc. Aaron Aamot died in Afghanistan in 2009.
